Belfast / Remote

Job Type

Short-Term Contract

Ambertail Games is an independent games studio based in the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland. We’re looking for a talented Shader/Technical Artist to help us make Amber Isle visually stunning while maintaining performance. As a part of our small team, you’ll become a key member in crafting what we hope will be something extraordinary.

Working within our Programming Team, you’ll combine creativity and imagination with technical expertise - bridging the art & engineering disciplines to implement content and develop features in Unity.

Collaborating closely with the Art and Technical Directors, you’ll be tasked with crafting shaders and visual effects in Unity. You will be responsible for creating the desired look and visual feel of Amber Isle, while also having the freedom to explore and suggest your own ideas and approaches.

Our ideal candidate is passionate, self-motivated, and technically minded with an artist’s eye. If you enjoy creating vibrant, rich worlds that you could get lost in, this could be the role for you!

  • Author and polish shaders in Unity with the use of lighting, rendering, and post-processing effects to create the desired look and visual feel.

  • Ability to create and animate visual effects.

  • Be a bridge between art and programming teams to understand the visual and technical requirements.

  • Receiving and applying feedback from the Technical & Art Directors, sharing your feedback and opinions where applicable and generally having a good attitude towards learning and improvement.

  • Maintain excellent communication and collaboration with the rest of the team. (We love sharing resources, techniques and ideas so we can all grow and learn together!)

  • Optionally: Develop content pipelines to efficiently manage assets between external software and Unity.

  • Optionally: Develop tools to be used by artists using Javascript/Typescript/Python or other relevant scripting languages.

Experience & Skills

  • At least one year’s experience working as a Technical Artist in the games industry.

  • Experience working with Unity and its Universal Render Pipeline.

  • Experience creating shaders in Unity, using Shader Editor, ASE (Amplify Shader Editor), or HLSL (High-Level Shader Language).

  • Knowledge of shading, lighting and rendering techniques.

  • Knowledge of creating tools and pipelines for art assets.

  • Good communication, interpersonal and organisation skills.

  • Ability to self-manage tasks and priorities.

  • Ability to work efficiently and be proactive with time management.

  • Practical organisation skills and the ability to follow established conventions.

  • A great team player, willing to work collaboratively and receive feedback or guidance from the rest of the team.

Nice to Have:

  • Have at least one released game credit.

  • Experience with HLSL and related shading languages.

  • Modelling experience in Blender or alternative suite.

  • Knowledge of Unity particle systems and Visual Effects workflows.

  • C# experience to design and build tools.

  • Knowledge and/or love for all things dinosaur/palaeontology is always a bonus!
